Pumpkin pie and turkey dinner. Getting together with family and friends. No matter what your traditions, the holiday season is almost here. For some, it’s a favorite time of year filled with joy and laughter. For others it’s unwanted encounters, financial pressure, and even depression. But for most of us, it’s a mixed bag full of a little bit of everything. Here are some key tips to make the most of this holiday season:
1. Choose your holiday activities purposefully. If gathering with a certain group of people is uncomfortable or causes anxiety, consider changing up your holiday routine—have dinner with one group and dessert with another. For example, drop in for a particular part of the night to give your holiday greetings and then move along to another activity or event.
2. Care for yourself. Take some time for quiet relaxation before going out or hosting a holiday party. Take a bath, read a book, get a massage. Get plenty of sleep to wake feeling rested and ready for whatever comes your way.
3. Limit alcohol consumption to prevent next morning after-affects. And by morning-after affects I mean regrets on telling your in-laws how you really feel, taking a selfie that is not of your face, or winning the Most Wild at the Office Party award. Of course, it’s always fun to have a glass of wine or two, but knowing your limits will prevent any embarrassing behavior that you will be held accountable for at a later time.
4. Establish a budget and stick with it. Gifts, parties, and holiday wardrobes can all add up quickly. Financial planning before the holidays will prevent financial headaches after the holidays.
5. Laugh—a lot. If the food burns, someone is particularly loud and obnoxious, or plans don’t go as planned, there is really only one thing to do—smile and laugh it off. The holidays only come but once a year, so do your best to take things lightly and make the best of it.
6. Consider the gap between action and reaction—plan how you will react. Given what was mentioned earlier above, most of us already know what we are walking into at a family holiday event. Many people don’t change drastically from one year to another unless they have been actively working on themselves. With that noted, it leaves the burden of reaction on you. It is within your power to expect certain behaviors from certain people and choose in advance how you will react.
7. Leave ample time if travel is a part of your holiday plan. Weather and unforeseen circumstances can wreak havoc on travel plans and cause chaos and disappointment. When booking flights or traveling long distances, give yourself enough time to create a comfortable cushion that will allow you to arrive on time even if something unexpected comes up.
8. Ask for help when you need it. Whether it’s help with cooking and cleaning or mental and emotional support, don’t go it alone. Ask family and friends to chip in and help. If the holidays are an emotional time for you, either because you have lost someone special that you miss or it is a particular trigger for you, speak with a professional who can offer you support. Don’t wait until it is too late. You deserve to have the support and love that you need during this time of year, and all other times as well.
9. Prioritize. Make a list of the most important things to do or experience this holiday season and get started early. Knowing what is most important to you will enable you to sail through the season without last-minute pressures and stresses and will connect you to a sense of joy that the holidays can bring.

Gel nail polish is, hands down, the most popular service at nail salons right now. But, many women may not be getting what they think they're getting.
CND's Shellac is a brand of gel nail polish. It was the first to hit nail salons, offering a no-chip, super-shiny nail color lasting up to two weeks.
As popularity grew, so did the competition. OPI and Gelish now offer their own colorful rainbows of gel nail polishes to choose from, but shop owners will tell you no two gel polishes are the same.
Shellac is a brand, just like Kleenex is a facial tissue and Q-tip is a cotton-tipped swab. There are other brands of facial tissue and cotton-swabs, but we often refer to them by the brand names. The same is true for Shellac. I feel Shellac is the best brand if you're main concern is the health of your nail, it soaks off five times faster than any other brand, and involves less scraping of the nail. The top coat for Shellac is also shinier than its competitors.
Shellac is the most expensive of the gel nail polishes on the market, and the bottles are half the size. The higher cost for the salon owner is one reason I believe other salons might not correct you if you ask for Shellac but choose a different gel polish when picking your color.
OPI's gel polish is easier to match with other nail colors and there are dozens of color options.
But a soak-off takes much longer. It can take 15 to 20 minutes to soak off OPI's gel polish which is concerning to some, because fingertips spending that much time in acetone can dehydrate nails and skin.
There's also more scraping involved during removal, which can be harder on the natural nail.
Gelish's appeal is it's wide variety of polish colors; there are more than a hundred to choose from. But I have the same concerns about the Gelish top and base coats, they are also are harder on the nail and take longer to soak off than Shellac.
Here's what you need to know if the health of your nails is your top concern:
1. If you want the healthiest gel polish for your nails, you should ask specifically for Shellac.
2. A sure sign you've not gotten Shellac is if it takes longer than five minutes to soak off when you go in for a color change.

Supporting findings made in earlier studies,the latest independent, peer-reviewed study demonstrates that UV lamps commonly used for hardening gel-polish are safe and do not increase the risk of developing skin cancer.
Published in the Spring 2013 issue of Photochemistry and Photobiology, the article, “Photobiological Safety Evaluation of UV Nail Lamps,” co-authored by Drs. John C. Dowdy and Robert Sayre, co-inventor of the SPF rating system for sunscreens, set out to determine if traditional fluorescent and LED-type nail lamps produce excess amounts of UV and increase the risk of skin cancer.
The researchers reached several important conclusions about skin safety. Dowdy and Sayre found that UV nail lamps exceeded safety expectations. These lamps were found to be significantly less hazardous than expected. UV exposure is so low that a person could put her hands under the nail lamp for 25 minutes a day without exceeding the internationally accepted safe limit.
In conclusion, the risk of developing non-melanoma skin cancer was 11 to 46 times lower than the risk of being exposed to noonday natural sunlight. If concerns still arise fingerless or sunscreen may be worn for protection.

There’s a really relaxing, almost meditative air you can cultivate when you curl up on the couch to paint your nails and marathon watch your televisual poison. Something about the rhythmic brushing of your nails and then waiting until they’re bone dry as you zone out is just so satisfying. But not every at-home manicure is created equal – believe it or not there is a right way and a wrong way to file your nails, here are the biggest at-home mani no-nos to avoid...
1) The right way to file
If you want to keep your nails healthy don’t just grab any old nail file and grind away willy nilly. How do the professionals do it? “So as not to jeopardise the strength of the nail, one should use a fine grit file designed specifically for natural nails and file edge to centre only,” advises Carvalho.
2) Pick a seasonally appropriate shade
Of course you can choose whatever colour takes your fancy, but as a general rule as the season shifts from summer to autumn the brights and neons are being packed away to make room for more classic shades, with Carvalho saying fires engine reds, blacks and nudes are proving particularly popular. She also says she finds most of her customers are choosing matte, opaque finishes over sheerer formulas.
3) Don’t rush
We’ve all been there – glopping way too much polish on the nail brush then cursing when it won’t dry properly. The key is to non-tacky, dent-free nails is to take things slowly. “Aim for two to three thin coats of polish, rather than overloading the brush and trying to get the job done with just one,” advises Carvalho.
4) Always use a base coat and top coat
“Base coat primarily helps to protect the nail bed so there is no staining from the lacquer,” says Carvalho. “You will also find polish easier to apply when base coat has been used.” She says that finishing off with a top coat is essential too, as it can make all the difference in protecting against chips and keeping nail lacquer looking shiny.
5) Don’t overestimate your skills
While getting out your polishes or dabbling in some amateur nail art is a lot of fun, some things are best left to the professionals. Carvalho names one of her biggest no-nos as attempting to use systems that were designed for professional use (like acrylic or gel nails) in your own home. “While some of these systems may even be sold as ‘easy enough to do at home’ they require a level of skill that should be left to the nail technician professional.”
